There are many different wild horse advocacy groups working to protect wild horses in the United States. These groups may have distinct missions, but they all share a commitment to protecting wild horses and their habitats, as well as promote the adoption and training of wild horses. To help balance populations with rangeland resources and other wildlife, the Bureau of Land Management gathers wild horses and burros from overpopulated public rangelands each year and offers them for adoption or sale to individuals and groups willing and able to provide humane, long-term care. Many advocacy groups work together, along with the BLM, to promote and sponser adoption events. CHF met one of these groups, the Sand Wash Basin Wild Horse Advocate Team (SWAT), and with their help became an approved foster of a wild horse! The Foster to Adopt program matches untouched wild horses with trainers to be gentled and then in March 2026, the trainer will show off their mustangs new skills. The mustang is then bid on by potential adopters and this includes the trainer! Yes, we can bid on our foster horse and become their official adopter.
Welcome Boston! She is a 3 year old (BLM estimates her at 2 years old but SWAT has photos of her as a foal in 2022) untouched wild horse that we will care for and give basic training so that she is ready for the adoption event in March! We will document her progress here. Oh, and of course, she needs a Star Wars barn name like the OTTBs. Her barn name is Rey!
